A shower of baby cakes

Baby shower cupcakes

I made these little fellas for my friend’s baby shower party. Cupcakes and
baby showers – they both seem to be the thing to do these days!

I’d decided to go for a chocolate flavour sponge, with a hint of vanilla,
and decorated them with piped pink and blue butter icing to keep with the
baby theme. I also wanted to make my own decorations, but trying to find cutters that
are small enough proved tricky. I managed to find some Fimo craft
cutters in John Lewis
that did the job a treat.

I rolled out some pre-made white royal icing to about 2mm thick and cut out
the different shapes. Then I melted equal parts caster sugar with water to
make a sugar water glue that I painted on to the shapes before I
sprinkled them with edible glitter.

March was the ‘Learning’ issue of Modus magazine. So, with a nod to the school chalkboard, I commissioned the very talented Belgian design studio Coming Soon to chalk the cover – masthead and all.
